Recent New Works

String Quartet No 1

The first movement, Andante, has interesting melodic lines for each of the instruments, and frequent key changes. The second movement, Larghetto, is a hymn that requires tight coordination between parts, while the third movement, Andante Moderato, shares the melody between the instruments, with an accompanying quaver pattern. The fourth movement, Allegro, is difficult for Violin 1, but has a relatively simple accompanying pattern for the other instruments.

Wannon Suite

A moderately easy piece for small orchestra in three movements. It is a set of reflections on the diverse and beautiful scenery of the Wannon region in Victoria. The first movement is light and airy, with short solo phrases for a number of instruments. The second movement has rich melodic lines for cello and violin, while the third movement has some rapid patterns for woodwind.

Raindrop Reverie

There was a time when meadow, grove, and stream, To earth, and every common sight,
To me did seem
Apparell’d in celestial light,

The glory and the freshness of a dream. (Wordsworth)

This short orchestral work, dominated by a recurring, almost haunting, melodic theme, is essentially a set of variations, first stated by one instrument and then taken over and shared amongst others. After a short introduction from the strings, staccato flutes weave the theme into their line, before the same melodic passage is taken over by sweeping strings. Others too take over the theme and the piece finishes with a lone violin that lets this evocation fade to nothingness and, perhaps, to the “freshness of a dream”.

Alban's Theme

This is a short piece for solo piano and orchestra, first performed in 2017 by the Limestone Coast Symphony Orchestra. It is based on the story of Alban, England's first martyr, and the reflections of a guide as he retraces the steps that Alban took as he was led to his savage execution by Roman soldiers.

Evening by the Moyne River

A meditation for solo violin and orchestra.

This is a slow pastorale-type piece and is moderately easy for amateur orchestras, but the solo violin part is quite challenging.

Jemima's Rope

Written for full orchestra, this is a selection from a musical based on the story of Jemima and her magic rope. Constantly changing rhythms and textures characterise this exciting score, which requires a large brass section. It is of moderate difficulty and will certainly be a favourite of audiences far and wide.

Lord Keep us Steadfast

For SATB and Piano or Organ (optional flute and cello)

This anthem was commissioned by the Lutheran Church of Singapore to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Straightforward for a choir of moderate ability.

The God of Love

This is another short piece for SATB choir with piano and flute accompaniment. The first verse is mainly for sopranos, with close harmony in verse 2 and a constant weaving of melodic patterns between the voices in the final verse. It is suitable for choirs of all abilities.

Naomi's Lament

This is a short, very simple piece for piano and string quartet. Slow and quite easy to play, although it demands strict precision in timing.

Piano Trio: Ruth's Song

An exquisite piece for Piano trio. Beautiful melodic lines, with many tempo variations, demanding a well coordinated conversation between all three players. The violin and cello parts are moderately difficult, while the piano part is mostly easy.
